Greek Orthodox Icon of a Mounted Warrior Saint, Probably St. George, 18th–19th Century - A devotional Greek Orthodox icon painted on a wood panel, depicting a haloed mounted warrior saint, probably Saint George, shown in military dress astride a richly harnessed horse. The saint is rendered against a warm gold-toned ground with architectural and landscape elements in the background. Remnants of a painted inscription appear in the upper field. The composition, palette, stylized facial treatment, and presentation are consistent with post-Byzantine Greek icon painting of the 18th to early 19th century. Painted in tempera on a prepared wood panel, with extensive craquelure and surface wear from age. The reverse of the panel shows numerous old insect holes, while the face exhibits a prominent vertical age crack extending through the composition, scattered losses, abrasions, darkening, and areas of worn or flaking pigment. Despite these condition issues, the principal figure remains clearly legible and the icon retains an attractive, untouched devotional character. Size: 6” x 8 1/4”.
