American Revolutionary War Naval Sword Hanger - An American Revolutionary War-period naval sword hanger dating to the late 18th century, featuring a forged iron hilt with an elegant S-shaped forward quillon terminating in a flattened button finial, rectangular knuckle bow, and faceted urn-form pommel. The distinctive ribbed wooden grip retains its original dark finish and is fitted with iron ferrules. The straight, single-edged blade is forged with a broad fuller extending much of its length and terminates in a spear point, exhibiting an untouched dark patina consistent with age and service. Naval hangers of this type were carried by officers, marines, ship's masters, and warrant officers aboard American vessels during the Revolutionary era. Their compact yet robust construction made them practical fighting swords for close-quarters combat aboard ship. Surviving American examples are considerably scarcer than their British counterparts due to limited domestic production and heavy wartime use.
