Presentation Grade U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword by The M.C. Lilley Co - Elegant U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's sword by The M.C. Lilley Company, Columbus, Ohio, one of America's foremost manufacturers of military and presentation swords during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The gilt brass hilt features an exceptionally detailed pierced guard incorporating the federal eagle with shield, finely chased scrolling foliage, and an ornate reverse branch. The lion-head pommel is crisply cast and richly decorated, while the black leather grip retains its gilt wire wrap in excellent condition. The straight, nickel-plated blade is etched and gilt with patriotic and military motifs including the Great Seal eagle, flags, drums, panoplies of arms, floral scrollwork, and the motto ”E Pluribus Unum.” The ricasso bears the maker's mark ”The M.C. Lilley Co., Columbus.” It is accompanied by its plated steel scabbard with gilt brass suspension mounts and throat. Although based on the regulation Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword, examples of this quality were privately purchased by Army officers and frequently served as presentation or ceremonial swords rather than field weapons. M.C. Lilley produced some of the finest officer's swords of the post-Civil War era, supplying military officers, state militia organizations, military academies, and fraternal societies.
