British 18th Century Infantry Officer's Spadroon Sword, circa 1780â1800 ~ Possible used during American Revolution - A fine late 18th-century British infantry officer's spadroon sword featuring a gilt brass hilt of elegant neoclassical form. The hilt is fitted with a single knuckle bow joined to a double side guard terminating at a rounded quillon, providing a lightweight yet effective guard typical of British infantry officer's swords of the period. The oval gilt brass guard is engraved with a martial trophy incorporating a stand of arms, banners, drums, and a cannon, reflecting the patriotic military motifs popular during the reign of George III. The pommel is similarly engraved with decorative military devices and floral ornamentation, while the grip retains its original silver wire wrapping over a wooden core, displaying an attractive mellow patina. The straight, single-edged blade is of slender spadroon form with a reinforced back edge and spear point, designed for both cutting and thrusting. The blade exhibits a pleasing aged patina with scattered areas of oxidation consistent with its age. Although no etching is visible on the exposed portion of the blade, many examples of this type were originally retailer- or maker-marked near the forte. This pattern was widely carried by British infantry officers during the closing decades of the 18th century, including the period of the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolutionary Wars. The combination of its engraved gilt hilt, elegant proportions, and practical spadroon blade represents the transitional evolution of British officer's swords before the adoption of the standardized 1796 infantry officer's pattern.
