Original Painting Bird Of Paradise Airplane Autographed By L.Maitland and A.Hegenberger - Rare original painting of airplane ”Bird of Paradise” with autographs by Lester J. Maitland (pilot) and Albert F. Hegenberger (navigator). The crew were awarded the Mackay Trophy and the Distinguished Flying Cross for their achievement. The Bird of Paradise remained in Hawaii for a time before being shipped back to Ohio, where it was eventually scrapped during World War II. Some artifacts are preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. The Bird of Paradise was a modified Atlantic-Fokker C-2 military transport aircraft used to complete the first transpacific flight from the United States mainland to Hawaii. Manned by U.S. Army Lieutenants Lester J. Maitland and Albert F. Hegenberger, the 2,407-mile journey from Oakland to Oahu was achieved in 25 hours and 50 minutes on June 28–29, 1927.
