It was designed for use by the U.S. Cavalry during the late 19th century. This tool was intended for digging shallow trenches or scraping up protective mounds in the field. It features a metal blade and a ribbed wooden handle, stamped with ”U.S.” It is paired with a leather-covered scabbard with a metal throat and a large ring for saddle mounting.
