Bidspirit auction | Coloured Sea Chart of Bermuda
Coloured Sea Chart of Bermuda Printed in Amsterdam by H.Hondius in 1633 - Important and decorative ancient geographical map of the Bermuda Islands, among the best-known seventeenth-century cartographic depictions of the archipelago, engraved within the Mercatorian tradition and published in Amsterdam by Jodocus Hondius. The plate belongs to the famous editorial production derived from Gerard Mercator's atlas, subsequently enlarged and spread by the Hondius family. The composition is laid out according to an elegant nautical chart scheme, with a dense network of rhumb lines, wind rose, rich toponymy and an articulated internal territorial subdivision, offering a reading that is geographic, administrative and maritime of the archipelago. Of particular note is the rich ornamental apparatus, with a central figurative cartouche, heraldic elements and refined decorative details, typical of the great Dutch cartography of the seventeenth century.
