Artist Bio: Thomas Cheesman (1760–1834) was a British reproductive engraver and a pupil of Francesco Bartolozzi, the Italian engraver who was the master of the stipple manner in Britain. His Washington plate was published in 1796 by A. C. de Poggi in London, engraved after John Trumbull's Washington at Trenton and produced under Trumbull's own supervision — the historian Justin Winsor called it the best engraving of Trumbull's paintings, and it became the model for later engravings of the subject. Note that the well-known Washington after Gilbert Stuart's Lansdowne portrait is a different plate, by James Heath.
