Artist Bio: Andrei Afanasievich Egorov (1878–1954), known in Estonia as Andrei Jegorov, was left deaf by a childhood injury and educated at the St. Petersburg School for the Deaf before entering the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied under Ilya Repin and worked in Repin's studio in 1903–04. He is identified above all with Russian and Estonian winter subjects — snow-covered roads, villages, and horse-drawn sleigh and troika scenes — handled in the Repin lineage of Russian realism inflected by Impressionism, with broken color and atmospheric snow-light. Gouache is entirely characteristic of him; he worked it extensively alongside oil and returned to these winter subjects repeatedly in small format. The sleigh in motion is his signature subject, horses and figures set as dark accents against broken snow-light.
