Scratches to the frame. Please see images for details.    Artist Bio: Werner Drewes (1899–1985) was a German-American painter and printmaker and one of the founders of American abstraction. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1921 under Johannes Itten, Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger and Oskar Schlemmer, and again at Dessau under Wassily Kandinsky and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, emigrating in 1930 and co-founding the American Abstract Artists in 1936. He taught at Columbia, Brooklyn College and the Institute of Design in Chicago, and longest at Washington University in St. Louis from 1946 to 1965. He is best known for pioneering the abstract woodcut in America — some 418 woodcuts among roughly 732 prints — and in paint for a characteristically thin, translucent surface that lets the underlayers read through.
