Born Marie Calabro in New Jersey to an Italian immigrant father who restored architectural ornament on public buildings, she is self-taught and has said she never took formal art lessons. She worked first in large-scale watercolor before turning to sculpture in the mid-1980s. Her subjects are drawn from Native American history and culture, with a recurring focus on women and children and on ceremonial and rite-of-passage moments.
