Gene Kloss ”Landscape” Watercolor on Paper - Signed lower left. Image: 20” x 28” Frame: 30 1/2” x 37 1/2” Condition: Toning to the matboard. Undulation to both the matboard and painting. Minor surface loss throughout the frame. Artist Bio: Gene Kloss (1903-1996), born Alice Geneva Glasier in Oakland, California, was an American printmaker and painter who settled permanently in Taos, New Mexico. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1924, working in painting under Ray Boynton and in etching under Perham Nahl, and afterward attended the California School of Fine Arts. Over some six decades she produced roughly 600 etchings and drypoints of Southwestern landscapes, adobe architecture and Pueblo ceremonial subjects. Her compositions are marked by strong tonal contrast, nocturnal light and steeply rising diagonals.
