School of Gilbert Stuart (American, b.1755) - The School of Gilbert Stuart, oil on canvas. Circa 1839-1842. Gilbert Stuart a student of Benjamin West, P.R.A. Although Stuart had no formal pupils many young artists included John Vanderlyn, Thomas Sully, and John Neagle took advantage of his advice. Other prominent painters of the period and in Philadelphia at the time included John Wesley Jarvis and Bass Otis. All of these painters were connected. I believe this is the mate to lot 92. Assuming that is, it previously, most likely would have been on the same canvas which was labeled Waring & Dimes, London also dating this to 1839-1842. Both measure the same and have identical frames. This painting came from an estate in Sinking Springs, PA not far from Philadelphia.Viewable Area 19.25x23.5Provenance: From the Estate of Doris B Keen, Sinking Spring, Pa. They were passed to her from her parents Edna (Garrett) Balkcom and Her father Thomas W. Balkcom, (1906-2009). He was the son of Dr. James W. Balkcom (1868-1949) and Mattie F. Truett. Dr. James W. Balkcom was the son of Dr Madison Larkin ”Lark” Balkcom (1844 -1915) & Emma Pauline DICK Balkcom (1850 - 1890).Thomas was very proud of being a Rotarian and a member of Torch Club, Reading, PA.
