West was one of King George III's favorite painters. This portrait suggests an affluent and genteel personality. West's studio was in London. It is where many of the great American artists studied, including Gilbert Stuart. Gilbert was born Gilbert Charles Stuart, (born Stewart). He was one of the most successful portraitist of the early times of America. Notice the similarity of features between this painting of West and early paintings done by Stuart of President Washington. His portrait of George Washington is one of his best-known works.
