18th/19th Century Gilt Iron Garuda - An 18th/19th century gilt iron garuda statue (also galon or nan belu in Burmese and karura in Japanese). A garuda is a legendary bird or bird-like creature in Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu faiths. Garuda is also the vehicle mount (Vahana) of the Hindu god Vishnu. This particular antique Garuda statue is from Thailand and was most likely part of a temple or shrine of some sort. The back of the Garuda is painted red, along with its eyes and beak, and the rest is gold gilt. This particular Garuda is battling a pair of serpents. The gold gilt does have some flaking due to its extreme age and comes on a wood base. Piece is in excellent condition for its age. Measures approx. 9”h (excluding base) x 6.5”w x 4”l
