Bidspirit auction | Casey Stengel Bowman 1953 #31
Casey Stengel Bowman 1953 #31 B/W card - Casey Stengel Bowman 1953 #31 B/W card This is the key card in the 64-card Bowman set. In 1953, Bowman produced what many hobbyists consider to be one of the greatest sets ever issued, the 160-card 1953 Bowman Color set. What some collectors forget is Bowman also issued a much smaller, black-and-white set. This set contains five total Hall of Famer cards, but none are more important than the one featuring Casey Stengel. Stengel, a solid player who hit .284 for his career from 1912-1925, is best known for his managerial excellence and reign over the New York Yankees. From 1949-1960, Stengel managed the Yankees and helped lead them to 7 World Series titles. It was a team filled with stars like Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Mickey Mantle, but it was Stengel who made the decisions for the Bronx Bombers. Stengel, who also had managerial stints with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1934-36), Boston Braves (1938-1943), and New York Mets (1962-1965), was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966 by the Veteran's Committee.
