Philippine / Indonesian Ceremonial Staff, 19th-20th C. - Southeast Asia, probably Philippines or Indonesia, 19th to 20th century. A carved wooden ceremonial staff or ritual implement of elongated form, with a broad paddle shaped terminal and pointed opposite end. The shaft is decorated with alternating pale and dark bands and sections of rattan and natural fiber binding. The construction and materials are consistent with ethnographic staffs and ceremonial objects produced throughout island Southeast Asia. Measurements 42” overall. Materials: Wood, rattan, natural fiber, cane or shell bands. Ex. Giustino Collection Condition: Shows age, surface wear, abrasions, cracks, losses, and oxidation to the binding materials throughout. Fiber wrapping is worn and partially detached in areas, with general age related wear to the wooden surfaces.
