Dayak Carved Wood Baby Carrier, 19th C. - Borneo, Dayak peoples, 19th century. A carved wooden baby carrier of curved rectangular form, deeply worked on the exterior with scrolling foliate and abstract motifs centering a mask-like face with circular eyes and bared teeth. The upper border is fitted with braided fiber or cord elements, with suspension cords at the sides, and the base carved with projecting footed elements. Baby carriers of this type were worn on the back and often decorated with protective imagery connected to status, lineage, and spiritual protection. Measurments 16”L 14.5”W Material: Wood, fiber cord, and applied shell inserts. Condition: Good overall condition, age related surface wear, rubbing, minor chips, old cracks, and scattered losses. Some wear and fraying to fiber cord elements. Surface patina and handling wear throughout, consistent with age and use.
