Marrienette Doll, Burma Late 19th - Early 20th C. - Myanmar, late 19th to early 20th century. A carved and lacquered wood Burmese marionette puppet, dressed in richly patterned textile garments with silver thread embroidery and applied ornaments. A traditional string suspension system with wooden control bars. The costume includes layered brocade style fabrics in red, green, pink, and gold tones, with floral and sequin like appliqu? decoration. Burmese marionette theatre was an important courtly and popular performance tradition in Myanmar, with puppets operated by strings and made to dance, gesture, and perform to music and narration. Measures 30” tall Medium: Wood, Textile, Lacquer, Silver gilded thread Condition: Wear consistent with age and use, including fraying and losses to textiles, scattered surface wear, minor losses to wood and lacquer, oxidation to metal elements, and tangling/loosening to suspension cords. Presents well overall.
