A substantial carved stone mace head, attributed to the Chavin culture of ancient Peru, circa 1000 - 500 BCE. The object is worked in a dark gray-brown hardstone and features a pierced central shaft opening, allowing it to be mounted on a wooden staff or handle. The exterior is modeled with two encircling bands of raised, faceted spikes, giving the piece a powerful sculptural presence. Chavin mace head with bold spikes closely associated with authority, symbolic power, and the highly developed religious traditions of the early Andean world.
