Japanese Katana, Koto Period 900CE-1596CE - Early Japanese Katana. Long single edge blade with a fuller and copper spacers with gilt brass fittings. Pierced openwork bronze tsuba with maple leaves. Black and gold Fuchi matching menuki with designs of lotus flower and abstract motifs. Wood handle tightly wrapped in folded leather strand. Size 37 3/4” L, blade 26 1/4” L, handle was not removed for inspection. Koto refers to the old sword period or era from about 900 - 1596. Many of the blades from this period can be described as lighter and more curved / well formed which saw a decline at the beginning of the Shinto period. Ex-Japanese Arms and Armour Collection
