Enormous Spanish Colonial Wood Crucifix, 18th c. - Massive important depiction of The Crucifixion of Jesus on the cross, 18th century (probably from Queretaro, Mexico). Powerful execution of Christ in pale white skin and light bluish-black details to wounds and Sangre over his body. His body exposed at his side and cheek form the spear that killed Christ. Panel atop reading ”INRI” the Latin abbreviation for the phrase (Lesus Nazarenus, Rex ludaeorum) which means Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews. Carved from two large planks of solid wood with fine embossed silver panels in the four corners of his holy aura. The cross carved with baroque details in gilt around a red wood core. Glass hand painted and inset eyes. Silver crown of thorns. Size 57 1/2” H x 37 1/2”W Ex-Private USA Collection Condition: Very good condition with light chips and wear commensurate with age and use. Some obvious signs of remounting reverse where it has been hung using different methods.
