Assorted lot of Early Spiked Spurs, 16th c. - Continental Europe, probably Spanish to the example with a carved scene and most intact, the quality of the iron suggests Spanish construction in the Iberian Peninsula. The remainder of typical Spanish Colonial form used in the 16th century during expansionism in the New World and New Spain. Horses and their equipment played a pivotal role in the colonial society of New Spain, especially among the Spanish aristocracy and military. Equestrian skills were highly prized, and riding was an essential part of everyday life, transportation, and military activities. Spur usage was integral to controlling and directing horses effectively and the development of an effective and easy to use larger spur was used throughout New Spain and Colonial Expansion.
