Scarce U.S. Topographical Engineers Belt, Buckle & Chain - Scarce U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers' belt, buckle and chain, circa 1838-1863. An excellent and well preserves belt with proof marks to the rear of the buckle. Gilded chain with all links retained. This branch of the US Army the Corps was founded in 1838. It was comprised of only officers who were handpicked from West Point and tasked with mapping, designing and constructing civil works such as costal fortifications, lighthouses and navigational routes. The Corps of Engineers was merged with the Army Corps of Engineers in 1863. Size 49 3/4” L
