Cocle Style Polychrome Pottery Plate - Panama, stylistically circa 1000 AD. Shallow polychrome painted plate with a figural human painted to the face. Figure wears a bird like feather cloak with elaborately details pants standing on pegged shoes. See Lebbe's, Guardians of the Life Stream for iconography. Size 9 1/2” W ex-New York, New York collection, ex-Howard T. Knapp collection, a former physicist for the Space Program at NASA, who had a deep passion for antiquities, armour and weaponry. He acquired many fascinating objects from the 1960's to the 1980's during his extensive word traveling. With an impressive collection that included a three thousand-year-old ancient Greek sword and over five thousand pieces of pottery, later in life Knapp was an antique dealer and director of Castle Armory Antique Arms Museum. Condition: Repaired from two pieces with touch ups to the break areas.
