Yoruba Brass Mace or Scepter
Yoruba peoples probably Ogboni society of Nigeria, West Africa, 19th century. Brass and iron mace with heavy geometric head with disc decoration in brass throughout connected to an iron shaft. The middle section and base of the scepter with thin disc patterns in brass and a small cone to the base. Size overall 18 1/2" L, 2lbs 13 ounces

The Ogboni society was a secret society in the Yoruba kingdoms of West Africa. The society was part of the checks and balances system of the kingdoms. They performed a range of political and religious functions, including kingmaking, influencing and advising monarchs, high court officials, dethroning Oba / Kings, and ordering Oba to commit self sacrifice or punishment.
