Chinese Amber, Turquoise & Carved Jewelry - Chinese Amber, Turquoise & Carved Jewelry Group Collection of Chinese jewelry and small ornaments comprising bead necklaces and bracelets, bangles, pendants and carved elements in a variety of traditional materials and colors. Of particular interest is the translucent golden-amber bead bracelet housed in a fitted brocade-covered box; several of the beads display clearly visible natural inclusions, including insect-like inclusions. The group also includes turquoise-blue beadwork and a necklace of graduated flattened turquoise-colored discs, pale and dark green hardstone bangles and beads, cream-colored bead bracelets, a black bead bracelet, and several reddish carved ornaments. The varied materials reflect the longstanding Chinese appreciation for stones and organic substances selected not merely for ornament but also for their color, texture and traditional symbolic associations. The carved red pieces are especially decorative, including a circular dragon medallion and a Buddhist figure carved in relief, together with additional figural plaques and geometric beads. The dragon, one of the most important auspicious motifs in Chinese art, traditionally represents imperial authority, strength and beneficent power, while Buddhist imagery was commonly incorporated into personal ornaments as an expression of devotion and protection. The combination of amber, turquoise-colored stone, green hardstones and carved devotional or auspicious subjects is characteristic of the broad tradition of Chinese personal adornment in which jewelry frequently carried symbolic as well as decorative meaning. Largest item in this collection is a bracelet made of bees in resin. The decorative box measures approximately 4”x2?x2?.
