Bidspirit auction | Antique Chinese Sancai-Glazed Molded Lotus
Antique Chinese Sancai-Glazed Molded Lotus Dish - Chinese sancai-glazed pottery dish of shallow circular form with a scalloped foliate rim, the interior molded in high relief as a radiating lotus. A raised green seed-pod center with applied bosses is surrounded by overlapping petals in amber-brown, deep aubergine, cream, and green, with incised veining adding definition to the individual forms. The reverse is predominantly covered in a warm amber glaze around a dark recessed foot. Accompanied by a fitted wooden storage box.The molded lotus design, substantial pottery body, and restrained green, amber, cream, and dark brown palette are closely associated with early Chinese sancai traditions, particularly those developed from the Tang dynasty and continued into the Liao period. Lotus imagery carries strong Buddhist symbolism of purity and spiritual enlightenment, while the deeply modeled radial composition recalls 8th?11th century molded sancai floral wares rather than later painted porcelain decoration. 2Hx8.5W
