COAL SCRIP COLLECTION - This lot features a unique set of coins that are believed to be Coal scrip. There are eight (8) in total. Coal scrip, a form of company-issued currency, was widely used in American coal towns, particularly in Appalachia, from the late 19th century until the late 1950s. Scrip, typically in the form of tokens or paper, was a way for coal companies to pay their miners, especially in remote areas where cash was scarce. It could be redeemed only at the company store, often the only store in the area, creating a system where miners were indebted to the company.
