Boy Robbing the Bird's Nest - Cast Iron Mechanical Bank with Box - Made by the J. & E. Stevens Company. Cromwell, Connecticut - Circa 1897. The Boy Robbing Bird's Nest bank offers us a powerful image on the irrepressible nature and adventurous spirit of children. On a seemingly perfect summer day, a young boy has come across a bird's nest in a low-lying branch of a tree. Curious, he tosses his blue hat on to the grass at the base of the tree and shimmies up some berry-laden vines. He is now seen edging his way carefully down the length of the branch. He seems desperate to know what's in the nest beyond his grasp. Careful though he has been, the branch suddenly snaps from his apparent weight, toppling both him and the nest to the ground. All the while, mama bird and papa bird have been swooping down to witness the tragic events of the broken tree limb as they unfold. Miraculously, with each playing of the bank, the tree's branch locks in place. The present offering is a spectacular boxed example of this rare and desirable toy bank.
