Uncle Sam - Cast Iron Mechanical Bank with Box - By the Shepard Hardware Company. Buffalo, New York - Circa 1888. In modern times, the Uncle Sam Bank is perhaps the most widely recognized toy bank ever created. It has been used in numerous ad campaigns as a moniker for savings by banking institutions; also , as a personification of American patriotism. Coins placed in Uncle Sam's right hand are deposited into his satchel when the activating lever is pressed. As with other Shepard banks from their Excelsior Series, there is a unique weighted element added that causes Uncle Sam's lower jaw with goatee to wobble in place, as if he is asking you to make a contribution to his coffers. This boxed example of the Uncle Sam Bank is genuinely extraordinary for its bright color and paucity of play-wear. Condition: Near Mint with Original Box.
