Oversized Dog Cart - Cast Iron Toy - Made by Ives, Blakeslee & Company. Bridgeport, Ct. - Ca. 1890 - 18” Long. From the Bob Stewart Collection. In the late 19th century, the Ives Company produced three oversized fancy carriage toys; a hansom cab, a dog cart and a cutter sleigh. Each carriage is drawn by an elegant horse that features uncommon articulated action in his walking legs. People often ask why this particular vehicle is called a dog cart when it is clearly drawn by a horse. The answer is illuminating. This carriage was named for the specific function it was designed for, hunting. Hunters needed to bring their dogs along with them and this vehicle was outfitted with a space beneath the driver's seat to accommodate the dogs. This is an exceptional specimen of this rare toy. Condition: Pristine Condition.
