Large Omnibus Carriage - Made by Francis, Field & Francis. Philadelphia, Pa. - Ca. 1850 - 22” Long. From archival records, it has been determined that Francis, Field & Francis began producing a small line of tin toys as early as the late 1830's. This was in addition to their regular trade in saddlery hardware and household tin ware products. They were located at 80 North Second Street, in what is today known as the Society Hill section of Philadelphia. This magnificent hand-painted toy demonstrates many aspects of tin toy design from the earliest years of production. It is composed of many different types of tin; including molded elements, hand cut pieces, and embossed tin scraps that were otherwise unusable. Another indication of its antebellum dating is the very manner in which it was painted. Please note the hand-drawn flourishes on the carriage body and window curtains. This approach to finishing is rarely in evidence in toys made after the Civil War. This is the largest version of Francis, Field & Francis' omnibus carriage. There are fewer than five surviving examples of this toy in this size. Condition: Excellent Condition. Missing two thirds of drivers seat.
