Clown Bell Ringers - Made by the Gong Bell Company. East Hampton, Ct. - Circa 1890's. Jerry Smith Collection Auction. This is one of the most colorful and amusing bell ringer toys ever manufactured. We find two clowns riding back to back on the arched spine of a mule. They hold on for dear life; one to the animal's ears and the other to his tail. Chimes suspended from fishing rod poles alternate striking the bells positioned at the two ends of the toy. To further accentuate the comical nature of this toy, the designers at Gong Bell have used a wheel design that is a strange iteration of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvius Man.
