Confectionery Bank - Scarce Blue Candy Drawers. Made by the Kyser & Rex Company. Frankford, Pennsylvania - Mid 1880's. Kyser & Rex created some of the most exquisite toy banks in the 19th century. Their designs exhibit a penchant for composition and narrative that really has no equal among the other toy bank manufacturers. They fashioned miniature environments that feel so perfectly realized that they become timeless. Even today, the viewer is able to nostalgically imagine what it must have felt like to visit the local confectionery shop and buy some penny candies. To operate the bank, place a coin upright in the slot found in the counter in front of the shop girl. Firmly pushing the lever in causes her to turn to the left. At the same time, the drawer marked ”Lozenge” opens and sweeps a thin circular candy on to her tray. Release the button, and she turns forward again, offering you the sweet confection. The Confectionery Bank is the only instance in which we find a toy bank that tangibly rewards its operator for saving pennies.
