Pan Playing Pipes for a Small Angel Cast Iron Doorstop - Unknown American Manufacturer. Ca. 1920's - 9 3/8” Tall x 13 7/8” Wide. Though most door stops pertain to imagery that is drawn from realism, such as animals, human figures, architectural pieces, etc., on occasion one discovers a fantasy creation like this one. Pan, who was known for being the protector of the shepherds and rural life, was born as the result of a union between Hermes and a wood nymph. With his budding horns and billy goat beard, he was seen as a grotesque little creature, and yet, his merry antics and winning personality charmed all the gods on Olympus. Hence, they gave him the name Pan (all) because he had won favor with all of them. Condition: Pristine Paint (repair to right ankle).
