Boss Tweed Bank - Tammany Tiger Iron Bank - American - 1873. William Magear Tweed was born in 1823 and joined the Tammany Hall in the 1840’s. Through a series of bribes he quickly gained power in the Tammany Hall (New York City’s political machine). By the 1860’s he ran Tammany Hall and was known as “Boss Tweed”. In 1873 Tweed was arrested and imprisoned for many elaborate corruption rings. It is estimated that he and his gang took $100 million from New York City coffers. The Tammany Hall was also known as the Society of St. Tammany, the Sons of St. Tammany or the Columbia Order and was founded in 1786. Tweed and his cronies were depicted in cartoons as the Tammany Tigers, loose and on the prowl for your money!
