Important Mechanical Buckboard - Ives, Blakeslee & Company Bridgeport, Ct. - 1880's - 17” L From the Louis Hertz Collection Excellent There was no finer maker of intricate mechanical novelty toys than Ives, Blakeslee of Bridgeport, Ct. Their creative output was often very detailed and colorful. They outfitted their exquisite carriage toys either with tin figures or with more expensive cloth dressed figures. The mechanical gig (above) was discovered by Tom Anderson nearly forty years ago. It was among the possessions of a direct descendant of the Ives Family. Large early toys of this genre are only rarely found in such terrific condition. The buckboard toy is much rarer than the mechanical gig. The horses gallop up and down in syncopated opposition. Fantastic Hertzprovenance on the buckboard.
