Four Horse Caisson - Ives, Blakeslee Company Bridgeport, CT - 1890's - 27” Long Excellent At the close of the 19th century, the Ives Company made an exquisite line of horse drawn toys known as their ”Phoenix Line”. This glamorous military caisson represents the apex of their achievements in cast iron toy production. In their designs, Ives deployed a visual vocabulary of detail that was never equaled by another toy maker. For example, take note of the horse's legs, which have sprung into action perhaps because they need to move the cannon to another side of the battlefield as quickly as possible. Ives never missed an opportunity to outshine their competitors.
