Special Copy with Handwritten Glosses: Sefer Peiros Ginosar - Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh, Amsterdam 1742. First Edition.
First edition of the Ohr Hachaim's fundamental work on Yoreh De'ah, Amsterdam 1742. It was written in an effort to disprove the views of R. Chizkiyah Di Silva in his work Pri Chadash, who frequently disagrees with the rulings of the Maran R. Yosef Karo - The Beis Yosef.
A special copy with several handwritten glosses penned by a disciple of the Pri Chadash, in an attempt to defend his teacher's views against the sharp and critical attacks of the Ohr HaChaim.
Contains four handwritten glosses, some lengthy. In a gloss on pp. 203, he writes: "I am astounded how the author can write such a thing on the wonder of our generation... did he really think he didn't understand... what even a child can understand? I believe that simply because he was too engrossed in arguing with him, he did not correctly understand his words. I will therefore explain the true intent of my master's words..." Please refer to the Hebrew description for an exact quote of the text.
The writer of these glosses has not yet been identified, although it remains clear that they were written by an accomplished Torah scholar and a leading disciple of the Pri Chadash.
It should be noted that in his introduction to this work, the Ohr Hachaim warns that his view should not be taken lightly, and especially for one who belittles him, saying: "I will cause his death by the bite of a snake" (refer to the Hebrew description for an exact quote). Although it is unclear what the true meaning of these words are, nonetheless it is clear that the above-mentioned writer of these glosses did not take kindly to the Ohr Hachaim's critical attacks on the viewpoints of the Pri Chadash.
Interestingly, the Chida in Shem Hagedolim recounts that he personally visited the grave of the Pri Chadash together with his teacher - the Ohr Hachaim, where he witnessed him asking forgiveness for his attacks on him, as seen in this very work.
Title page partly damaged at bottom left area and is attached to paper for support. Old paper repairs, worming; sometimes affecting text. Like all copies, the paper is browned, brittle and fragile. This copy lacks the [3] leaves following the title page, which contain approbations and the author's introduction.
