Chamisha Chumshei Torah With Ohr Hachaim – A Complete Original Set, Zhitomir 1859

A magnificent, original set of Chumashim printed by Chaninah Lipa and Yehoshua Heschel Shapiro in Zhitomir, 1859. This edition was printed with the commentary of the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh, as well as the Nachal Kedumim commentary of the Chida. Also includes the standard commentaries found in most Chumashim, such as Targum Yerushalmi, Yonasan Ben Uziel, Ba’al Haturim and Mesorah. Likewise, the Chomesh Megillos contain the Rishon L’Tzion commentary, which was authored by the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh.

Each volume is complete with two title pages – the first in red and black ink, and the second in black ink only, which details the virtues and advantages of this edition. At the end of each volume is a prayer book which contains Tefillos for Shabbos, according to Nusach Sefard. On verso of the final leaf in each volume, we find a twenty-six year calendar from 1860 until 1886, which contains the accurate Moled for each month.

Zhitomir imprints have long been favored by Chassidim and their Rebbes, and remain in high demand till today. They are often known to bring blessing into one’s household as they were printed with utmost Holiness and purity. In addition, they are well-known for their quality, black letterpress font - an uncommon printing feat in the early 19th century. During their prime, the Shapiro family press was cherished and respected by all, and was undoubtedly one of the leading Jewish printing presses throughout the Russian Empire.

A striking set in excellent condition, printed on high-quality paper. An original set, which somehow survived intact since it was first printed 165 years ago. Bound in beautiful new bindings with leather and gilt spines. Two leaves in the Vayikra volume are shorter in size, probably supplied from another copy. A few minor insignificant holes are seen in the Bamidbar volume.
