A Beautiful Prayer Book, Amsterdam 1726. Bound In Contemporary Binding With Gilt Decorations

A beautiful and charming Siddur, printed according to the Sephardic rite, Amsterdam 1726. This edition was edited and prepared for print by Samuel Rodrigues Mendez of Amsterdam, who was known to produce beautiful and accurate works. He also prepared the famed Tikkun Sofrim which was printed in Amsterdam the very same year, which was the only Hebrew book to feature engraved title pages by Bernard Picart.

Bound in a striking contemporary binding with gilt accents, which bears the name of Issac David Henriques De Castro, who was of Marrano descent. Seemingly, he was a descendant of Issac David De Castro, the famed Marrano from Brazil who was burned at the stake in 1647. Although it is not immediately clear exactly which member of the De Castro family owned this prayer book, there is a record of a David Henriques De Castro who lived in Amsterdam from 1705 until his death in 1779. We assume that this is probably who owned this prayer book.

A very good copy, printed on thick, high-quality paper. Bound in a contemporary custom leather binding with gilt accents; corners chipped. All edges gilt.

152 pp. Approx. 16cm.
