Treasure of a Lifetime! Sefer Tehillim and Ma’amados, Zhitomir 1853. A Luxurious Wide-Margined Copy!
Sefer Tehillim, printed in Zhitomir in 1853 by R. Chanina Lipa and R. Yehoshua Heschel Shapiro. A magnificent, wide-margined copy in excellent condition! This 1853 edition is unrecorded; no copy exists in The National Library of Israel. A complete copy of this edition has never been offered for sale at auction.
A pedigreed copy, which belonged to R. Moshe Nachum Yerushalimsky, with his stamp seen on title page. Corrections in his handwriting are seen on some pages. R. Moshe Nachum Yerushalimsky (1855-1916), one of the leading Poskim during the late 19th century. He corresponded with virtually all Torah leaders of his day, and authored thousands of responsa. In his early years he was a follower of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz, and later he became a staunch follower of R. Dovid of Tolna. In 1902, he was appointed Rav of Kielce, Poland. It was during this time that he used this Tehillim, as indicated on his stamp.
Also seen is the personal stamp of Rabbi Menachem (Emanuel) Schwartz of Scranton, PA. Rabbi Menachem Schwartz (1870-1939), a saintly Chasidic Jew who was a disciple of the Kedushas Yom Tov of Sighet as well as the Minchas Elazar of Munkatch. In his later years he emigrated to America and moved to Scranton, where he owned a wine business. It is said that R. Menachem was the only person living in America from whom the Minchas Elazar accepted money; a testament to the righteousness and stature of R. Menachem Schwartz.
This copy is complete with all pages of Ma’amados, bound in a sumptuous custom leather binding with gilt decoration. With matching slipcase.
In excellent condition, all edges painted red. The wide-margin area of the first [3] pages were repaired in the lifetime of R. Moshe Nachum (as his stamp is seen in the repaired margin area), with no loss of text.
