Talmud Babli – Maseches Eiruvin, Slavita 1836. Historic Volume With Chasidic Approbations

A complete, beautiful copy of the historic volume of Maseches Eiruvin printed in Slavita – one of the last books ever to be printed by Shmuel Abba Shapiro.

As is well known, this edition was reprinted after a long and bitter controversy which took place between the Shapiro family in Slavuta and the Romm printers of Vilna. As such, this edition bears important approbations of leading Torah scholars and Chassidic Rebbes.

Volumes from the 1835-1836 Slavita Shas are very rare. To the best of our knowledge, a copy in beautiful condition such as this has never been offered at auction.

Interestingly, this edition boasts the "Dibbur Hamaschil" letters of Rashi in bold ink! Many believe that this is a modern innovation of the late 1990s, but in reality this was already done in the 1836!

Only Berachos, Shabbos and Eiruvin were printed. As Pesachim was being prepared for print, one of their workers were found dead in the print shop, apparently by suicide. Because of this tragic incident, the legendary Shapiro press in Slavuta was forced to close down by the authorities. Shumel Abba was later sentenced to forced labor as he was ultimately blamed for his worker’s death. For further reading, see: Mavo L’Shas Vilna, Yoseph Shalom Weinfeld, Jerusalem 1994, pages 266-286.

In very good condition, with both title pages. A small abrasion is seen on pp. 3-4, lightly affecting some text. Bound in an ornate, new leather binding.

[4], 132, 1-130 pp.

Page size: 38cm.
