A Rare and Important Printed Broadside From R. Yehoshua Leib Diskin, Jerusalem 1878. - A rare broadside of great historical importance, to the members of the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem. In it, R. Yehoshua Leib Diskin – along with other leading Jerusalem Rabbis, declare a harsh ban prohibiting the learning or speaking of any foreign language or foreign studies, other than Lashon Hakodesh.  A notable absent signator to this ban is R. Shmuel Salant, who had been the Chief Rabbi of the Ashkenazic Communities and of the Old Yishuv for several decades. The reason for this is because he disagreed with R. Yehoshua Leib in this regard and did not feel a ban was needed. This was part of a larger dispute between followers of R. Shmuel Salant and the Maharil Diskin, which is told in detail in several historical accounts of the Old Yishuv.  Interestingly, this broadside is dated 12 Adar I 5638 (1878), a mere few months after Maharil Diskin’s arrival from Brisk. The ban was a renewal of previous bans which were in effect prior to the arrival of R. Yehoshua Leib.  In good condition, mounted for support. Some old fold marks, not affecting text.
