A Striking Hand-Painted Torah Wimpel, Probably Germany 1814. - A beautiful Torah Wimpel hand-painted on linen in red and green ink. Dated 1814, and reads (in Hebrew): אברהם בן מאיר הכהן נולד במ”ט (=במזל טוב) יום וי”ו בשבת תקע”ד ה' יגלהו (?) לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים א”ס (=אמן סלה) In English:  ”Avraham, son of Meir Hakohen, was born with Mazel Tov, Sixth day of the week 5574 (1814). May the Almighty raise him to Torah, Chuppah and Good Deeds”.  The custom to use a Torah Wimpel (binder) was adopted by Ashkenazi communities, starting from the 16th century onwards. The swaddling of the newborn boy, used at the circumcision ceremony, was cut into four strips that were sewn together into one long band and embroidered. It was then donated to the synagogue upon the boy’s first birthday, which was used to bind the Torah scroll. In overall good condition, with light stains due to age. A small tear is seen at the lower portion of the third strip.  Measures approx. 10' long.
