Rare: The Pentateuch - R. Shamshon Refael Hirsch Chumash. Frankfurt-Am-Main 1867-1878. First Edition. - A complete set of R. Hirsch's magnum opus , published from 1867 until completion in 1878. Ever since its publication, it has been known as a true classic in Jewish thought. The goal of the commentary was to expound the text by ascertaining the exact meaning of the words – similar to Mendelsohn’s Bi’ur – but on the basis of Halachic and Aggadic interpretations. R. Hirsch felt it necessary to combat Mendelsohn’s ideals and others like him. Thus, he largely succeeded in saving German Jewry from the ideals of the Reform movement. Due to its immense popularity, very few sets of the first edition have survived intact. As such, a complete set of the first edition is scarce and rarely seen at auction. In overall very good condition. Printed on thick, high-quality paper. Mixed bindings, three volumes supplied from a different set and bound in non-original bindings. Vol. I: [6], 633, [2] pp. Vol II: [4], 614 pp. Vol III: [4], 749, [1] pp. Vol IV: [4], 517, [1] pp. Vol V: [4], 588, [1] pp.
