A Handwritten and Signed Letter by R. Meir Shapiro - The First Daf Yomi Cycle - Yevamos 88. - A letter handwritten and signed by the legendary Gaon R. Meir Shapiro, Rosh Yeshiva of Chachmei Lublin and founder of the Daf HaYomi movement. This letter is addressed to Agudas Yisroel, with instructions to change his original letter, apparently for a Daf Yomi fundraiser. “Here is the text of the letter, just with two changes… please erase the phrase “if you’d like you can make the donation even smaller”, since that will mislead people into thinking they can give less than the standard donation…”. He also adds that “The Daf Yomi should be added, and you should adhere to it from now on”. Seemingly, he is establishing here in this letter that the daily Daf should be added as standard to further publications. He concludes by saying: “Please send it back quickly, as time is of essence – strike the iron while it is still hot”. This letter, like many others, is famously signed not with the actual date, but rather with the day’s Daf - “Yevamos 88” - which corresponds to January 29th, 1926, written during the very first Daf Yomi cycle. Letters from R. Meir Shapiro referencing the Daf Yomi are highly uncommon. In excellent condition. Written on official letterhead, while serving as Rabbi of Piotrków.
