Lot Essay: Monteiths are a type of bowl used to chill drinking glasses, done by resting the stems of the glasses along the scalloped openings while the bowls cool in the water of the bowl. The term ”Monteith” comes from an eccentric Scot, Lord Monteith, who was remarked for wearing a scalloped coat which the bowl's rim resembled. This bowl likely made in the style of English or European silver examples for the European market. However, the heavy potting suggests that it was perhaps made from a simplified wooden model of silver examples of around 1700-10. Height: 9 in x width: 12 in x diameter: 10 1/2 in.
