Bela Kadar Expressionist Folklore Gouache Painting - Bela Kadar (Hungarian, 1877-1956). Gouache on paper Expressionist folklore painting, early 20th century. Depicting a dream-like folk tale scene rendered in an earthy, muted palette. Featuring a central female figure with raised arms holding a mask-like face surrounded by stylized figures, flora, and domestic animals. Signed along the lower right. Kadar frequently looked to traditional Hungarian folklore and peasant life for his narratives. His dream-like compositions often depict community celebrations, musicians, and village figures surrounded by flora and animals, evoking a poetic atmosphere similar to the works of his contemporary, Marc Chagall. There are a few scattered small losses. There are small, rounded accretions scattered throughout the work. Small creases along the right edge, particularly along the upper and lower corners. A few small areas of light crazing. Wear along the extreme edges. The extreme edges of the work appear uneven; they have possibly been trimmed. Floated in frame atop a non-acdic mat. Framed under plexiglass. Light accretions along the plexiglass. Light wear to the frame. Verso not inspected.
